Excerpts from "Escape to Babylon" by Andrea Moore-Emmett, Salt Lake City Weekly
Update:
After "Escape to Babylon" was first published two members of Tapestry, Jayne Voight and Alona West (fictitious names), left the organization in order to more comfortably express and assert their views on polygamy while Stacy Erickson took a leave of absence to care for her young twins.
We have experienced the progression of Tapestry as other refugees have found their way offering new talents and gifts and then moving forward to accomplish their own individual goals. As a grassroots organization it was with the assistance of incredible advisors such as Fran Lund, Greg Farley, and Charles Castle that we became a non-profit corporation and received the national NOW Women of Courage award in 1999. There have been many others who have volunteered countless hours of time to fight against the abuses of polygamy, including our present advisors: Douglas White, attorney; Mindy MacDougall, licensed social worker; Jan Tyler, board chair; Chris Beck, secretary; and Melinda Brown, grant writer and office assistant.
As an indication of our progress and growth in the year 2000 we changed our name to Tapestry Against Polygamy. We have now come full circle recognizing a divine power within us to create a new tapestry for ourselves and our children.

Our name:
The name "Tapestry of Polygamy" was introduced at our first meeting when someone mentioned that by living polygamy we had each woven a unique story. Although all of our experiences in polygamy varied greatly, several common threads held us together, including an overwhelming desire to help liberate families adversely affected by polygamy.
