What kind of organization is Tapestry Against Polygamy?

Our Board of Trustees and Board of Directors includes ex-polygamous wives and family members.   Our advisory Board consists of professionals from the legal and social work community.

Our main focus is to offer support and resources for refugees and advocate for changes to make the transition more conducive for those exiting the lifestyle. We exist solely on donations and the help of volunteers.

How many supporters does Tapestry Against Polygamy have?

We have over 500,000 supporters worldwide. Many people see polygamy as a black and white issue, but it's about a lack of human rights. Pure and simple: polygamy is against the law and should be prosecuted.

Is polygamy still practiced?

The mainstream Mormon church doesn't openly advocate polygamy; however, there are many tens of thousands of people in Utah (estimates range up to 100,000) and throughout the western United States who do participate in the plurality of wives. The vast majority are fundamentalist Mormons, clinging to the early doctrine of the L.D.S. faith and the teachings of their founder, Joseph Smith. Since they adhere to the doctrines of early Mormonism, they consider themselves to be Mormons, even if the mainstream L.D.S. Church doesn't recognize them as such. There is also a new influx of Christian polygamists entering the state of Utah.

Christian polygamists, is there such a thing?

Yes, they claim to have over 14,000 participants worldwide and many of them are moving to the western United States, particularly Utah. Their main purpose in coming to Utah and surrounding areas is to convert the Mormon polygamists to Christian polygamy (since they don't believe Mormon fundamentalists to be Christians).

How does Tapestry Against Polygamy want the anti-polygamy laws enforced?

We do not advocate raids!
We have seen through history that this is not effective. We do believe, however, that an additional charge of bigamy should be added when polygamists are charged with other crimes. These other crimes are varied and include such charges as tax evasion, welfare fraud, medical neglect, incest, etc. This charge of bigamy would also carry a punishment of up to five years in prison. We feel that it may act as a deterrent, urging a man to think twice about marrying his 13 year old niece.

What is blood atonement? I have heard that threats of blood atonement are often laid on those who want to leave polygamy.

Many believe the early teachings of Brigham Young who believed and preached that spilling the blood of a sinner would gain them salvation and redemption from the sin. Many wives have been threatened with this Blood Atonement.
